Resident Evil 5

Played a couple of hours of Resident Evil 5 last night with Keong. Considering that I always stayed cleared from the first two or three titles of the series because of how scary it was, Resident Evil 5 is not that terrifying. This is mostly due to the nature of the zombies - where they are now more like mind-controlled monsters instead of brain eating zombies. I never thought I would say this, but I missed the good old zombie; dragging their feet towards you in the most horrific way possible.

I really find issue on the game portrayal of zombies. Now they can wield an assortment of weapons, ride motorbikes, drive cars and almost doing whatever a normal human can - except 10 times stupider and slower. What happened to the zombies that kept me awake all night through back when I was younger? The simplicity of the zombies back then is what made it so horrifying. Its true that the Resident Evil now gives you an extra challenge with the added IQ of the zombies. But it is a bad trade in expense of how the terrifying the zombies could be. Because of this I was a little bit disappointed of how the game could not manage to scared me, unable to keep me on my toes. Perhaps I grew out of being afraid of zombies, but I think no matter the age, there is still a way to be frighten.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed the game. But not in the way that I imagined I would. The frights aren’t there anymore but replaced with challenging enemy to find ways to dispose of with limited ammunition and weaponry. On this note, I would like to add that zombies are still my number one “monster” of all. In light of that, it was splendid to see titles such as Left 4 Dead and even Call of Duty to include “zombies” option.

Now I’m off to shower and then to Keong’s place to continue playing Resident Evil 5.
